A form of yarn known as filament yarn is made up of long, continuous strands of either natural or synthetic fibers. To create a single strand, these fibers are twisted or assembled together. Spun yarn is created by twisting together short staple strands; this is not the same as filament yarn.

The term "thermoplastic yarn," or "hot melt yarn," refers to a kind of yarn made of thermoplastic polymers that may fuse together when heated to a high temperature and pressure. Traditional textile fibers like polyester, nylon, or polypropylene are combined with thermoplastic resins or adhesives to create these yarns.
